SMC Fall 2011

Health, Wellness & the Pursuit of Happiness

August 2011, I started school at Santa Monica College in Los Angeles, California!
SMC's theme this year was Health, Wellness, and the Pursuit of Happiness.
Here we can take a look at some of my artwork from my Design 1 and Drawing 1 courses, inspired by the theme.

midterm for Design 1
To reflect the theme, I chose to draw happy healthy foods actively engaged in their environment: dancing, swimming, listening to music, exploring, and playing by a sunny stream.

Some underlying themes included were:
friendship, kindness, teamwork, environmental awareness, the great outdoors, eat your vegetables, zero discrimination, and to inspire imagination.

This project will be displayed in the art student showcase at the SMC Performing Arts Centre (11th & Santa Monica) in Spring of 2012.

midterm for Drawing 1
The task for our drawing midterm was still life. I selected nostalgic possessions and introduced a string of lights as the main light source for a challenge.

Little Joe (Lojo aka Long John)
Ink drawing was my favourite medium from Drawing 1; however, I found it very challenging!

interim

The second half of design class was spent painting hues.
We took line designs from the beginning of the semester, Xerox'd and blew them up, finishing off the project by painting over our designs with gouache (ink from the Xerox repelled water, like wax crayons!). The above image shows one of the blown up painted Xeroxes. This particular one concentrates on tints, tones, and shades contrasting secondary colours.

design final
For this design I utilized saved scraps of paint swatches from our preceding projects in a mosaic created as a compilation of my designs from throughout the semester. Can you spot the dancing blueberries in my design midterm? (see first image at the top of the page!) :)

This was by far my favourite project of the semester.
